One of the best aspects of family medicine is caring for different generations as well as entire families. This allows me to see the big picture and offer more comprehensive care: I love being able to not only treat a patient for the flu, but also ask how their mother is doing or how their son did on his college finals. Patients are more than just a set of symptoms, and I enjoy learning about their lives, pressures and concerns. It's part of knowing how to most effectively care for them: a better understanding of my patients' overall well-being allows me to offer more effective healthcare treatment and advice.
I am an enthusiastic advocate of prevention – taking care of issues while they are still small, as well as getting consistent exercise, enough sleep, and managing stress in healthy ways – all an important part of improving a patient's quality of life. I believe my patients would describe me as a doctor who listens carefully, responds with compassion, and offers strong evidenced-based care.
